It's no secret to anyone trying to "crack the code" with Affiliate Marketing that finding hot markets that are just waiting to give you their money in exchange for whatever product you're offering them, right? And it seems like nobody is really willing to part with their secrets of just how to find those hot & hungry markets.

Well, I decided to share a method that I've been using to successfully find those red hot buyers for awhile now. The key to remember is to find the market that wants to buy something first; then you proceed to sell them whatever it is they want. Easy, right?

Not for some folks. Here's one way to go about it.

You need to find out what people are buying, right now, in the largest demand.

Do a search on Overture - http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/ for your "root keyword". Let's say it's baby showers. Overture tells me at this given moment, 91,671 searches were made for this term last month. Not a bad market size at all.

Now it is time to do more market research.

First go to PayPal.com and click on the Shops link at the bottom of the page. PayPal lists over 42,000 websites here by category. Click on the category you're researching in the Categories column on the left. PayPal then displays the top shops in that category, ranked by volume - the number of sales made through PayPal. Look around a bit and find a high volume product in your category and you're off to the races.

Ok, now that you've looked at PayPal and found what looks like a popular market, the next step is a little research with Google.

Go to http://www.groups.google.com I the search box, enter the name of a product that you're considering promoting. Example: baby shower favors. This search will list the different groups discussing your product. Click on a few of the links to see how many people are posting to these different groups. If there are a lot of people posting, then apparently there is considerable interest in the product and it should be very much in demand.

Next, visit Amazon.com and click on the "Top Sellers" tab. These are the most popular items selling on Amazon, updated every hour. This will give you an overall view of popular items currently selling online.

One final resource is eBay. Click over to http://pages.ebay.com/sellercentral/whatshot.html to find out which categories and products are hot - and where you'll probably be able to find all sorts of ideas about products that are currently in demand!

As a new affiliate marketer, you may have started coming across the term "residual" or "recurring" in reference to affiliate programs. So what does it mean? Quite simply: You sell something once, yet continue to be paid month after month.

Residual affiliate programs can be quite lucrative for an affiliate to promote. Because you're selling something that requires a monthly fee - such as a membership site, ongoing service, or products that get consumed and must be replaced - you can continue earning affiliate income from sales made months and even years ago.

Now, residual income does not last forever. How long it actually lasts depends on the type of products or services you're promoting.

If you're promoting a membership site for instance, you'll continue to earn income as long as the people you referred to the site remain members. Are there many different brands? You can use a Thesaurus to look for other words that mean the same thing that you may not have thought of. The more keywords you come up with the better.

The most popular may not be the best, especially for the beginning marketer. They are most likely the most expensive and have the most competition. When you are first starting out, it is better to use less popular keywords that still generate traffic because this will help keep your costs low. The exception to this is click bank. If the cost is $50 or under monthly than I would go for it, Losing $50 if the program does not turn out to be any good is a bummer, but losing a few thousand dollars really hurts!

Third
Does the affiliate program offer you free training and marketing materials? This is a must, especially for affiliates that are brand new to marketing online. Also, you don`t want to have to go and make your own banners, ads and graphics to promote their products.

Fourth
Is the affiliate program established? How long have they been around and do they have a good track record for paying their affiliates on time? You can search related forums to find out about peoples gripes with various opportunities.

Fifth
Does the affiliate program offer excellent support? If you have a question, do you want to wait three weeks for a reply? Of course not but this is the turn around time for some affiliate programs support departments to answer your questions.

Do you go through affiliate programs like most people go through pairs of socks? Many Internet marketers do. In fact, 97% of all Internet marketers never make a single cent advertising opportunities on the Internet. They jump from one opportunity to the next and never see results. If you want to break free from this cycle of failure--if you want to earn a living off of your Internet ventures--continue reading. I will tell you exactly how you can earn money from any legitimate affiliate program.

In order to get the most information from what I am about to explain to you, you must accept that these methods are not intended to be "secrets." These are scientifically-proven, best-practice methods that all top marketers use. If you want results, you will have to do and continue to do the following five things:

1. Know your product. Do not advertise for a product or affiliate program that you are not currently using. I cannot even count the amount of affiliate programs and product offers I have rejected immediately from people who know very little about what they are actually promoting. If you want to make money selling a product or service, you have to use it, understand it, and be able to convince your prospects that they should own it. If you yourself do not believe in it--because you have not even tried it--then you will have a hard time convincing anyone else it is worthwhile.

2. Know your field. You must continually become more knowledgeable about the market in which you are selling your product or service. For instance, I try to read at least 50 pages on Internet marketing each day to complement the marketing I do. This keeps me learning about my field. The best part about this is that you can do it without spending any money at all. The Internet is loaded with free content sites where you can find free ebooks and special reports on any subject. The Internet is also loaded with affiliate program promoters who are out-selling you. Use google to find these sites and then reverse engineer them--pick apart the source code, page setup, and content layout to find out how you can become more like your competition who is outselling you.

3. Focus your efforts and limit your innovation. As much as "limiting your innovation" may go against your business instincts, it is an absolute must with a limited marketing budget. Figure out what works for you scientifically by measuring your advertising results. When you find something that works, stick with it. If you are getting traffic from reciprocal links, continue to build them. If you are getting constant sign-ups from your newsletter, improve your newsletter and order more leads. Do not stray far from your original plan. Preset the amount of innovative ideas you want to try out each night, but center your marketing efforts around getting better results from methods that have already worked for you.

4. Spend money wisely. The Internet is loaded with scams and bad information. It is really easy to be tricked into blowing money on "get rich quick" schemes and information that you can find in free resources. I personally have spent thousands of dollars needlessly. But do not get me wrong; I am not saying there are no legitimate affiliate promotion services or information products out there: I am saying that the vast majority of them do not work as well as they say they do. So hold onto your cash. When you find a product that multiple people have personally recommended to you, then consider buying it. Otherwise, conserve your cash for purchasing services or products that will produce hard, definite results, such as email leads for your newsletter or phone leads you can contact personally to promote your program.

5. Remember that your success is dependent on your choices and your work alone. If you get upset about not becoming successful with a specific affiliate program, do not blame the program--blame yourself. Do a thorough analysis of what you could be doing better and how you could be making quantitative progress
every single day. There are people who do not pay any money at all for promotional services and yet are still able to make a living just from using free tools on the Internet. If they can do it, there is no reason at all why you cannot. Joining a marketing group or forum in your field will help you realize this reality. Seeing and talking to people who are succeeding in your field will remind you that it is entirely possible to make money online without having a million dollars to begin with.

While there are some "secrets" to getting more sign-ups and site visitors, the bigger part of affiliate program marketing is following a sound business plan. If you keep the five concepts I have listed above central to your marketing campaign, you will not fail. But, if you continue to market sporadically--switching from product to product and method to method--you will never break out of that 97% who never make money.

Selling Affiliate Products In Your Online Store. Avoid These Common Online Affiliate Scams. I lost a ton of money promoting useless non-paying affiliate programs until I found these guys. It's time to learn the truth about affiliate products and sales from someone who KNOWS the business!

If you want to sell products as an affiliate, where do you look? There are all kinds of affiliate programs to join on several major affiliate networks. There's likely to be lots of decent sales generating affiliate companies right?

Not true, according to Adam Fisher, the Affiliate Product Sourcing Editor for Net Worth Radio:

When you see all these "Incredible" affiliate companies and programs and products of affiliate networks on the internet, promising phenomenal sales and offering commissions ranging anywhere from 5% to 50% or more, what you're seeing is 99% junk.

There are thousands of scammers, snake oil salesmen and con artists on the Internet who are just lying around waiting to AMBUSH you when you begin looking for REAL affiliate programs to do business with. Believe it or not, there is a whole niche industry built up on the Net around this kind of scamming! I decided to get to the bottom of this appeal we all have with online affiliate companies, and find out if there really were any PROFITABLE ones for selling "hot" affiliate goods at premium prices.

I literally contacted the administrator of every affiliate website I could find. Posing as an investor, I managed to persuade the owners that I was seriously interested in purchasing their entire website and business. That way, once the cartoonish bags of money flashed in their heads, they would grant me free access to their member's areas to examine what I would be "selling". Well, I was appalled with 99% of what I found. Many of the owners actually bragged about how many people joined their useless non-paying affiliate programs. I repeatedly found:

outdated links
non-working links
links leading to other sites that wanted you to sell crap
no help section
no real email support
few if any sales
I quickly realized that these so-called affiliate networks were totally pointless. And the owners knew it, yet they were laughing all the way to the ATM machine! Needless to say, I didn't respond when they asked if I was still interested in purchasing their websites. Surprisingly, while sitting through all of the scam artist's websites, I was able to locate a group of individuals that actually ran profitable and legitimate programs.

The owners were common folk like you and me that found a way to earn extra money working from home on their computers. Their membership areas were impressive, with a great deal of quality information on how to make $100-$200 per day on your computer doing very little work. I even chatted with a few of their affiliates in several online forums, and they confirmed that they were earning extra money using the information, support and products that the affiliate websites had provided them. It was like I found a few diamonds in the rough. But don't take my word for it, you can drop by the over one dozen sites I found. See what you think.

They DO NOT charge a minimal fee for access to their program, which is to be expected for any legitimate program that actually has people on staff who are dedicated to helping you get earning online. What a warm group of people! Anyway, if you do decide you are interested in any of the dozen companies, I advise you to join post-haste, as the owners have informed me that they are getting so many new affiliate members by word of mouth referrals, that they will be blocking off membership completely by month's end. (By the way, you didn't receive this news from me!) They don't have a large enough staff to welcome many more people, and they are driven to providing excellent service to each person. Well, my quest to find legitimate online affiliate programs has come to an end. I have to mention I was profoundly disappointed with most of what I found, and I strongly urge you not to take any chances doing business with any companies other than the twelve I will share with you.

Clickbank is essentially what is referred to as an Affiliate Service Provider. Clickbank is a marketplace of digital products like software and ebooks. All of these digital products are owned by various merchants who sign up to Clickbank as a vendor. In turn Clickbank displays all these merchant products in their marketplace as well as handle all the payment processing.

This is pretty much how the sales are handled :-

Buyer -----> pays Clickbank (online via credit card or paypal) -----> Clickbank pays you (every 2 weeks via cheque)

You can either sign up as Clickbank as an affiliate or a merchant. If you've got your own product then you would sign up as a merchant, post your product on the Clickbank marketplace and sell it on your own or simply rely on affiliates to sell it for you.

If you don't have your own product then you'd sign up as an affiliate (like me) and sell other merchant's product. For now I will talk about selling other people's products as an affiliate as its the best place to start. As an affiliate for every sale you make Clickbank will pay you a certain percentage of the sale. This percentage is decided by the merchant and if you access the Clickbank marketplace you'll be able to view the percentage paid out to affiliates.

Although there are a lot of other Affiliate Service Providers other than Clickbank, if you're just starting out with affiliate marketing then I would suggest starting with Clickbank. They've got the biggest collection of digital products in various categories ranging from Fun & Entertainment to Money & Employment. What I like about digital products is the high commission percentage paid out to affiliates ranging from 50-75%. Amazon, for example pay you a measely 10-15% as most of their products are physical products that carry production costs.

To start promoting Clickbank products you need to sign up with Clickbank (its free!).

A little about Adwords then....

I'm not going to go into a lot of detail about Adwords but just a short introduction to what its all about. Adwords is basically a pay per click advertising program. Once you sign up (Google charges you a $5 activition fee) you specify the amount you're willing to pay for that specific keyword and write your ads. Everytime that keyword is searched for on Google, your ad will be displayed and everytime someone clicks on it Google will charge you. That's pretty much it!

In my entry about how a site could make money, I have discussed a little about affiliate programs. And with the feedback I received from WomenXtra, requesting for some recommended sites on affiliate programs and banners, I thought I should discuss the two further on separate articles.

The first discussion would be on affiliate programs. I have mentioned before that this kind of programs work by “recommendation”:

1. You send a visitor/buyer from your site to an affiliated site.
2. Then your affiliated site will pay you.
3. And you earn money through commission basis.

All affiliate programs work the same, only that there are some that really pays well. However, you should also take extra precaution because there are also a lot of frauds on these programs.

Even though you do minimal effort on this kind of program, you could lose everything--- money, time, and traffic----- if you have been victimized by a fraud program. To avoid such loss, you should be properly informed about affiliate programs.

Here are the extra information you should know:

1. There are many affiliate programs out there---- some are free and some ask you to pay for membership--- but, just to stay out of risk, choose your affiliate from the roster of free-from-fees affiliates.

2. Join more than one affiliate program. This will enable you to compare one program from the other, and will very much track those who are frauds.

You need to ask questions first before you join an affiliate program. Do a little research about the choices of program that you intend to join into. Get some answers because they will be the deciding point of what you will be achieving later on.
Will it cost you anything to join? Most affiliate programs being offered today are absolutely free of charge. So why settle for those that charge you some dollars before joining.
When do they issue the commission checks? Every program is different. Some issue their checks once a month, every quarter, etc. Select the one that is suited to your payment time choice. Many affiliate programs are setting a minimum earned commission amount that an affiliate must meet or exceed in order for their checks to be issued.
What is the hit per sale ratio? This is the average number of hits to a banner or text link it takes to generate a sale based on all affiliate statistics. This factor is extremely important because this will tell you how much traffic you must generate before you can earn a commission from the sale.
How are referrals from an affiliate’s site tracked and for how long do they remain in the system? You need to be confident on the program enough to track those people you refer from your site. This is the only way that you can credit for a sale. The period of time that those people stay in the system is also important. This is because some visitors do not buy initially but may want to return later to make the purchase. Know if you will still get credit for the sale if it is done some months from a certain day.
What are the kinds of affiliate stats available? Your choice of affiliate program should be capable of offering detailed stats. They should be available online anytime you decide to check them out. Constantly checking your individual stats is important to know how many impressions, hits and sales are already generated from your site. Impressions are the number of times the banner or text link was viewed by a visitor of your site. A hit is the one clicking on the banner or text links.
Does the affiliate program also pay for the hits and impressions besides the commissions on sales? It is important that impressions and hits are also paid, as this will add to the earnings you get from the sales commission. This is especially important if the program you are in offers low sales to be able to hit ratio.
Who is the online retailer? Find out whom you are doing business with to know if it is really a solid company. Know the products they are selling and the average amount they are achieving. Is the affiliate a one tier or two tier program? A single tier program pays you only for the business you yourself have generated. A two tier program pays you for the business, plus it also pays you a commission on the on the sales generated by any affiliate you sponsor in your program. Some two-tier programs are even paying small fees on each new affiliate you sponsor. More like a recruitment fee.
Lastly, what is the amount of commission paid? 5% - 20% is the commission paid by most programs. .01% - .05% is the amount paid for each hit. If you find a program that also pays for impressions, the amount paid is not much at all. As you can see from the figures, you will now understand why the average sales amount and hit to sale ratio is important.
These are just some of the questions that needed answering first before you enter into an affiliate program. You should be familiar with the many important aspects that your chosen program should have before incorporating them into your website. Try to ask your affiliate program choices these questions. These can help you select the right program for you site from among the many available.

The biggest source of my online income continues to be from participating in and promoting Affiliate Programs. They provide a steady flow of checks to the mail box. Some of these checks are for just a few dollars, and some of them are for several hundred dollars. But all of them are a direct result of the principles that we will be discussing in this report.
The simplicity of representing a ready-made marketing concept is truly enjoyable. All the hard work has been done in advance by the company. Your job is simply to market the product or service.

Please note that while this article is not intended to offend anyone, it is going to be direct and to the point. The candy coating has been removed.

It always amazes me when I look at the stats of People who join Affiliate Programs. Over 90% of them do absolutely nothing. They don't even so much as click onto their own affiliate page. Some of this may be due to a lack of knowledge or understanding of the process. Some have the impression that simply signing up will make them a success. But, the biggest reason, in my opinion, is that they just lose interest. They only have as much interest as it takes to get signed up and hope that the company or their upline will make them rich. They decide to "give it a try" and see what happens.

Basically, what it boils down to is that the new affiliate marketer must believe in the program AND IN THEMSELVES enough to take some serious action. Now if you are the type of person who is very intent on building a big affiliate income, keep reading. If you are only casually interested in Affiliate success, this article is not for you.

Promote Products and Services that YOU Believe In
First of all you must find a program that gets you excited. Yes, even with the anonymity that the Internet offers, your enthusiasm will be reflected loudly in your written words. Remember this, most people will make their purchase because of a testimonial or personal recommendation. Simply pasting pre written company materials is not going to yield the number of sign ups and sales that you want. You are going to have to communicate directly to the heart of your prospects. In order to do this effectively, you must exude enthusiasm and confidence.

Use Personal Endorsements
Personal endorsements and testimonials are going to provide far more credibility than banner ads and pretty pictures ever will. You must have them. Write your own. Ask your customers for feedback. Ask your upline for their testimonial. Ask your downline. Get as many legitimate words of praise for the program that you are promoting as possible.
Have you ever seen the ads that read; "I lost xx pounds - ask me how". They are everywhere; in newspapers, on buttons that people wear, Laundromat bulletin boards, bumper stickers, etc.. As distasteful as they may be, they are a testament to the power of personal testimonials.

Utilize the Full Value of Ezines
The most effective way to reach your prospects is through ezines. I won't go into all the reasons why you should have your own, there are already many fine articles on that subject. Let's just say that if you don't publish your own ezine, then you will have to pay someone else who does to present your marketing message. Even if you do have your own ezine it is very wise to buy or barter advertising space in other Internet newsletters to increase your exposure.

There are several ways present your message in ezines. The most common, but least effective, is through the use of classified ads. They do work, and are cheap to buy, but you will see far better results with a higher profile ad. Placing your message at or near the top of the publication gives it a much better chance of being seen. These "Sponsor Ads" or "Featured Ads" not only stand out from the rest of the ads, but they carry more credibility too. Also, many publishers will allow you to include more copy in the higher paying ads.

In your own ezine you can take your liberties and write full articles that discuss the merits of your affiliate program. This can be a very effective method, but you need to remember to write it with the readers interests in mind. Nothing turns people off faster than blatant self serving commercials. Always use the WIIFM principle. The reader needs to know, "What's In It For Me".

The Best Method
The absolute best way that I have found to promote any product or service on the Internet is by sending out special news releases or time sensitive updates to a targeted list of opt-in ezine subscribers. These solo mailings are separate from the regular ezine. They focus only on one program, or aspect of it. The results are astounding. Usually within a few hours you will see 90% of the action. If the copy is written well you can see a very high response rate.

Use Your Stats
One last method that helps me to focus my promotions effectively is simply to study the site logs and stats pages. Many Affiliate companies will provide you with a program stats page. Most of them are only about hits, sign ups and income. This is good information to know, but it doesn't let you know which ads are working the best. That's why I like to create redirect pages on my site that are trackable in my site server logs.

Here's how it works. You create an ad for XYZ affiliate and place it in an ezine (or on a web page). Instead of putting in a link to your affiliate page address, you would create a page on your site that automatically sends the visitor to the affiliate page. Each ad that you use would lead to a separate redirect page.

There are two main benefits to this.
1) The link address is going to look more professional and probably shorter. eg www.yourdomain.com/xyz3.htm.

Be Wise
One caveat. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of Affiliate Programs floating around on the Internet for all kinds of products and services. Some of them are dogs. They just won't work, regardless of how well you promote them. Be wise in selecting the one(s) that you are going to invest your time and money into.

When you find a good one, practice the above methods, along with your own creativity and enthusiasm, and you too will experience the joy of opening envelopes with large checks in them. I look forward to reading YOUR success story.

#2 - Write reviews: You need to know your product and preferable use it yourself so that you can write honest reviews about it. What better way to promote a product and get people to believe it's great than to say you use it too? Post these reviews on your website, in your newsletters, articles and any other site you visit that gives you an opportunity to do so.

#3 - Use a Blog: I recommend that you get a Blog and link back and forth to your website. This will allow you to create discussions on the blog about the product you are selling and list any updates to your regular website. Active Blogs are indexed quicker by many search engines than are new sites, and after the blog is indexed, the pages you have linked to the blog will also get indexed.

#4 - Write Articles: One of the best ways to become an expert on your product is to write articles on the Internet and include a link to your website in the resource box. BUILDING AN AFFILIATE INCOME - PICKING PROFITABLE AFFILIATE PROGRAMS

It's a great feeling to open your mail and see a check there for $ 500 or more. It's an even greater feeling to get two or three! While there are hordes of affiliates out there who never make a sale or get a check, there are a few of us who get checks every month, all year long. No matter what kind of site you have, you want to be one of those people. There are several steps to building an effective affiliate income:
1. Identify a workable market niche.
2. Locate solid affiliate programs to offer that niche.
3. Build a site and newsletter with high-quality information tied to that niche.
4. Get your targeted visitors to the site and signed up for your newsletter.
5. Send your visitors with open and receptive minds to the affiliate sites you represent, ready to buy.
In this article I will look at the second step: Locating affiliate programs that will make you the long-term money you want and need. There are a number of places you can look for affiliate programs.

Here is how you can identify a program that will make you a good income over the coming months and years:

1. MAKE SURE IT IS TARGETED TO YOUR NICHE
If your niche is radio controlled car racing enthusiasts, you don't want to offer them internet marketing courses. Instead, you will want to offer them products related to RC racing.

2. DETERMINE IF THE COMMISSION IS SUFFICIENT
Sending an email to your list doesn't cost you anything, right? WRONG! Here's why... Every time you send out an email about one product, you are giving up the opportunity to send out a recommendation on some other product. This is called opportunity cost. I do a product recommendation to my list about once per month. I know that the average return per subscriber for each of those mailers is around 10 to 20 cents per subscriber. If I choose to recommend a product to my list and the commission is too low, I may make only 2 cents per subscriber. So, that mailer "cost" me 8 cents per subscriber. That is a HUGE amount of wasted opportunity. The commission offered on your product needs to be enough to justify your cost in advertising the product. 40-50% of a digital product and 30-40% for a "hard good" is probably reasonable. If someone is trying to give you less than this you most likely need to walk away. Of course, re-curing commissions have a few other variables to consider.

3. MAKE SURE THE PAGE HAS A SOLID SALES PROCESS
Before you recommend a product--even if you truly believe in the product--make sure you take a close look at the sales process. Is the sales page readable? Compelling? If not, don't send people to the page--they aren't going to buy.

4. CHECK OUT THE PRODUCT YOURSELF DON'T RECOMMEND A PRODUCT YOU HAVEN'T AT LEAST *EXAMINED* YOURSELF!
Recommending products you have not looked at is like Russian roulette--you might get by with it for a couple spins, but eventually it will shoot you in the head. A well-known marketer recommended an ebook he had not read himself. He had read the first version, but not volume 2. Later, when it became obvious the product was pretty much a waste of money, the "guru's" recommendation--sent to his list--now appeared as a testimonial at the sales site. It hurt this guru's credibility and his own ability to make sales.

5. MAKE SURE SOLID TRACKING IS IN PLACE
You should be able to see how many visitors you have sent to the affiliate site, how many purchased and how much sales commission you have earned. This is a bare minimum. How I Earn 80k a year in Affiliate Income?
Jim Daniels shares his secrets to finding and working the right affiliate programs to bring in 80K a year - and how YOU can find the right program to help YOU do the same!

A few years ago, when affiliate programs began to make their way onto the Net, I was already "living" online. So naturally, I was one of the very first marketers to take a look at this "new" online marketing idea.
And frankly, after a close look inside the numbers, what I saw was not overly exciting. But thanks to a little patience and a few strategies I developed, I've been able to generate affiliate income that most experts predicted was impossible (and continue to say it's impossible to this day!)

If you're looking to do the same, read on...
The very first affiliate program I reviewed, paid an average of ten percent commissions on each product sale my site generated. The products (mostly books) averaged around $15 so my share would be about a buck and a half per sale. I figured if I could get one sale out of every 35 visitors I sent to the site, that would be a decent conversion rate (better than average, actually). After doing a little math, I concluded that I would earn about $45 for every 1000 visitors I sent to the site.
But getting 1000 visitors to any given affiliate site meant I'd have to get about 10,000 visitors to my own site. If I could do that every week, I'd be doing OK for a small business site with a marketing budget close to zero. But I was already learning that it takes time and money to get 10,000 visitors a week. And let's see... for all my traffic generating efforts I would pull in a cool $180 a month? It didn't take a genius to figure out that it might not be worth the effort. I passed.

But I did NOT pass on the affiliate game altogether. I knew there was potential for excellent long-term income in the right affiliate programs so I bided my time and grew my website traffic and my ezine subscriber numbers. Meanwhile, I kept a close eye on the affiliate horizon.
Then during 1998 and 1999 I joined my first few serious affiliate programs. And to make a long story short, these few affiliate programs were responsible for over $80,000 in income at my website last year alone. Who says you can't make a decent income with affiliate programs?
While I've sampled a few other programs along the way, I continue to promote only a select few programs on a regular basis. As far as affiliate program marketing goes, you won't find too many marketers who are as picky as I am. But picky works. Had I joined that very first affiliate program I looked at, I would have been lucky to make $5,000 last year in affiliate income. Not bad, but a far cry from 80K.

So what programs pulled in 80k last year for me?
I'm not going to tell you!
That's right, you'll have to poke around at my website and find out. I did not write today's tip to round up more second-tier affiliates. I wrote it to show you the TRUE potential in affiliate program marketing and to explain exactly how you can grow affiliate income like I have.

So let's get to that next. What are the secrets to generating measurable affiliate income? Here they are in a nice five-step program...

1. Choose the right affiliate programs! As my example above shows, this important step can mean a difference of 75K a year, easily. The right programs for YOU are ...
a) programs that tie in with your site well (Ex: don't promote a dating service if your site focuses on business)
b) programs that you can get behind 100% and recommend personally to your website visitors, subscribers and all else who come in contact with your business
c) programs that pay serious commissions of 25% or more on sales -- and if you can earn residual or recurring income that's even better (Ex: services like web hosting require customers to pay monthly, so you as an affiliate can earn monthly too!)

2. Promote your best programs with personal recommendations at your website and in your email messages.
While most affiliate programs offer marketing assistance to their affiliates, your best bet is to form your own marketing plan and promotion material. This sets your affiliate site apart from thousands of others.
And don't forget, in order to truly make personal recommendations, you'll need to be a CUSTOMER as well. I see far too many affiliates making personal recommendations without even making the investment in the product or service they are promoting. Not only will you lose credibility when you do this, you'll be limiting your marketing potential by not knowing the product like you should.

3. Don't go affiliate crazy and promote too many programs.
A handful is fine, but a dozen or more cheapens the experience for your users. If you absolutely MUST promote lots of products and services, PERSONALLY RECOMMEND only a small number of them. Take your very best ONE or TWO affiliate programs and stick to recommending them as your staple. A premium service with a slightly higher than normal price tag and generous commission is ideal for this strategy. But be sure it is worth the price!

4. Don't expect to grow serious affiliate income without having a website of your own.
Too many newbies make this mistake. They think they can avoid ALL online business start-up time and expenses by joining an affiliate program and using the free site they get as their main site. It's a mistake. The best affiliates in EVERY program have their own website where they bring ALL their traffic first. From a "home base" like this you are free to make personal recommendations, promote a variety of programs and earn income other ways such as advertising or selling your own products and services. Growing your own site is a major key to growing serious long-term affiliate income.

5. Get help!
Don't go it alone. Ask successful affiliates how they've grown their incomes - most are happy to share the details. Read their books, take their courses and get on their subscriber lists. There's no point in trying to reinvent the wheel. Simply follow the path that other successful affiliates have taken before you and you can achieve success too. It really is that simple.
